President of the Círculo Fortuny, a wide-ranging group representing all segments of the luxury sector in Spain, Carlos Falcó, has said governments such as his country’s need to take steps to make it easier for wealthy tourists, principally from China, to come to Europe to shop.

Speaking in Madrid at a breakfast meeting of Círculo Fortuny members, Mr Falcó said that more than 50% of all sales of luxury goods in Europe are now carried out by wealthy tourists visiting from other parts of the world. He said that, in 2014, more tourists from China than from any other country made overseas trips, putting the figure at 110 million and pointing out that this is likely to double between now and 2020.

He said Spain should prepare now to claim a good share of the money these tourists have shown themselves likely to spend on European luxury goods. He called on the government to make it easier for Chinese tourists to secure visas and negotiate more direct flights to cities such as Madrid, boosting tourism away from the country’s coasts.
