Livestock farmers’ leader issues warning to Uruguayan packers

One of Uruguay’s most important livestock industry bodies, Federación Rural (FR), has a new president. The association elected Fernando Dighiero, who raises cattle on a ranch in the province of La Florida, as its new leader at the start of June, replacing Carlos María Uriarte.

In an initial public statement, Mr Dighiero warned the government in Montevideo that “farmers will not tolerate any increase in taxes” and, at the same time, sent a clear message to packer firms. He said that the pressures packers put on livestock farmers need to ease. “If the packer industry thinks it’s going to take the hides off farmers’ own backs, it will find itself face to face with an enemy,” he insisted.
