Argentina can become a major player in beef exports again

Meat industry experts in Argentina expect a 1% decrease in cattle slaughter there for 2015 as the  national herd continues to build up after several years of decline. However, the figures for the first quarter of this show a year-on-year increase of 1.5%, with more than 3.1 million head of cattle passing through the country’s abbatoirs.

Commentators in Argentina have said that growing demand for Argentinean beef in export markets, particularly from China, have led to higher slaughter numbers.

There have been government-enforced restrictions on exports, these are easing, leading observers of the industry to say in a recent statement: “Argentina has a great livestock tradition and an excellent natural environment for raising cattle. If the situation keeps improving, Argentina can become, once again, a major player in world beef market, especially if policies to restrict exports continue to ease.”
