Algeria: call for stricter controls on imports of hides and skins

The president of an agribusiness federation in Algeria, Abdelwahab Ziani, has said the North African country needs to impose much stricter controls on imports of a number of products in the sector, including hides and skins.

Speaking on national radio in April, Mr Ziani said he believed the government should look closely at imported materials and compare them to what Algeria is producing on its own. “If our quality is just as good, I believe Algeria needs to make the choice to consume our national produce first,” he said. “It’s a question of economic survival because of the number of jobs that are at stake.”
