UNIDO runs successful climate change workshop for tanners in Pakistan
United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has run a successful workshop in Pakistan to promote climate change mitigation, adaptation and carbon-emission-reducing strategies among tanners there.

Working with the Pakistan Tanners’ Association, UNIDO ran the workshop in Karachi on April 20, with Arif Ahmad Khan, a senior official from the government ministry set up to address climate change in Pakistan, in attendance.

“Water is increasingly becoming a scare natural resource,” UNIDO said after the event. “Pakistan has moved from a water-affluent country to become a water-stressed country. In order to overcome the situation, UNIDO has chalked out a programme to improve the environmental situation of the tanning cluster at Korangi, near Karachi, and has made funding available to the government through its Global Environmental Fund (GEF) to help put the programme into effect.”

Priority areas include upgrading the existing effluent collection and conveyance system at Korangi, as well as a comprehensive plan for solid waste management to reduce the carbon footprint of the tanners who operate there.

Arif Ahmad Khan said the programme would have the full co-operation of the government, but he also said it was important for private-sector operators to “come forward and join hands with the government” on these improvements.

UNIDO’s industrial development officer, Ivan Kral, told the workshop that improvement programmes such as the one at Korangi increase job opportunities and socio-economic uplift in the target areas.
