The organisers have said they will accept applications from Dutch entrepreneurs or Dutch firms working with overseas partners. They have until May 31 to submit an application and the winner of the inaugural Sustainable Leather Award will be announced on October 1.
“Until recently, the term sustainability was not widely used in the leather industry,” said Marja Baas, sector manager for leather at MVO Nederland (CSR Netherlands), one of the NGOs behind the initiative. “The Sustainable Leather Award aims to reward pioneers and to inspire tanners, fashion brands, designers and retailers to switch to sustainable and fair leather.”
The prize will be awarded to the initiative with the potential to make the biggest positive impact on working conditions, animal welfare or environmental protection within the leather supply chain. All applications will be judged on sustainable impact, originality, development stage, transparency and potential for collaboration and upscaling, the organisers said.
