The marketing director for the automotive industry for leather chemicals group Stahl, Stefan Buri, returned to Europe in the autumn of 2014 to take up his new role after five years in South America.

Based in Novo Hamburgo in Brazil, Mr Buri represented Clariant, whose leather business unit Stahl acquired in 2014, in the South American market.

Speaking recently at the Future of Automotive Leather conference in Bordeaux, he said his arrival in Brazil from his native Switzerland coincided with the launch of JBS Couros, the leather producing division of Brazilian packer group JBS, whose progress he was able to observe at close hand throughout his time in South America.

“JBS Couros has made a tremendous difference,” he said. “It’s established now and it’s a game-changer for this industry, producing 90,000 hides per day across the global JBS slaughter network and processing 30,000 per day to crust in its own tanneries and between 10,000 and 15,000 per day to finished leather.”
