Praise for Ethiopia’s leather industry from the World Bank

World Bank vice-president for Africa, Makhtar Diop, has praised the example set for other countries there by the Ethiopian leather industry.

In a speech in China earlier this year, Mr Diop said he expects Africa’s economy to grow by 4.6% in 2015 and for the rate of growth to rise above 5% by 2017.

He said three strategies that will boost growth in Africa are moving to manufacturing, moving up the agriculture value chain, and diversifying exports and it was in this context that he said the Ethiopian leather industry represented a good example of what Africa economies can achieve. He drew a contrast between this approach and a more traditional strategy of African countries exporting their raw materials and commodities.
