Ethiopia looks at hide imports after poor first six months

Ethiopia’s government has said it is disappointed in export earnings from the country’s manufacturing sector in the first six months of the current financial year.

In the six months from July to December 2014, manufacturers in Ethiopia brought in export earnings of $191.5 million; the government had set $505 million as its target.

Industry minister, Ahmed Abitew, said on announcing the figures that raw materials shortages were affecting Ethiopian production. Specific to the leather sector, he said the government was studying new measures to import hides from neighbouring countries to address a shortfall in raw material that the minister said had caused temporary stoppages to tannery operations in Ethiopia in recent months.
