Argentina’s Ahora 12 programme keeps delivering for leathergoods and shoes

The government of Argentina said on January 18 that a temporary programme it set up last year to encourage consumers to increase their spending on domestically manufactured goods continues to grow in popularity and to deliver important benefits to the industries taking part, including leathergoods and footwear.

It launched the programme, ‘Ahora 12’ (‘Now 12’), in September 2014 and will run it until March. It involves consumers using approved credit cards to buy a list of goods made in Argentina in 12 interest-free instalments from participating retailers and from a special e-commerce site. Transactions have to take place between Thursday and Sunday each week.

Government statements have said the volume and value of purchases keeps increasing, with mid-January transactions surpassing even those of the weekends around Christmas and New Year.

For leathergoods and footwear, the volume of purchases is now well in excess of 500,000 per week and Argentinean producers of leatheroods and leather shoes have now raked in revenues of just under $80 million since Ahora 12 began.
