JBS Couros celebrates ongoing Leather Working Group success

All but three of the 18 JBS Couros tanneries assessed have received gold certification, with the others receiving silver. At the same time, all 18 tanneries have received a grade A certification in traceability.
LWG added a traceability element to its protocol several years ago, making it clear that to obtain a grade A rating, tanners need to put an individual stamp on each hide and be able to identify the abattoir from which each piece of raw material comes and the date of slaughter.
JBS Couros has said that its traceability system involves stamping an alpha-numeric code onto hides at raw stage and tracking each code all the way through to finished leather. From this, the company can identify the slaughterhouse and the date of slaughter, as the LWG protocol demands.
However, because JBS Couros sources its hides from abattoirs run by its own parent group, the codes on the hides also make it possible to trace the group of farms from which the abattoir sourced cattle on a particular day.
The tanning division said at the start of 2015 that its success in achieving grade A certification in traceability at all of its LWG-audited facilities shows its commitment to sourcing sustainable raw materials and to keeping carefulcontrol of its production processes, “starting at the rigorous selection of cattle suppliers, ensuring that they are aligned with the company’s commitments, all the way up to the finished leather”.
