Wake up and smell the leather

In comments she made as part of an article in the Financial Times at the end of November on the problem of counterfeit “luxury” goods, Sophie Hersan, product director of Vestiaire Collective, said shoppers need to use the senses of touch and smell, rather than eyesight alone in deciding if a product is genuine or not. “Smell and feel the leather,” she urged.
Vestiaire Collective was founded in France in 2009 and has since expanded its services to online shoppers in the UK, Germany, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium and the US and has won the backing of two investment firms: Paris-based Ventech and London-based Balderton Capital. In 2013 it won a gold award in the European E-Commerce Awards. It invites private sellers to offer pre-owned high-end handbags and other accessories for sale to online shoppers, but carries out a physical check of every item before shipping to buyers.
