Leather Pipeline: Are low production levels an indictor of declining leather demand?

In this week’s exclusive Leather Pipeline report, we hear of worrying reports that many tanneries in Europe and Asia, which should be running at full tilt by the end of October, are reporting that they are not.

While the situation varies from region to region, and depends on the types of skins or leather and the end use, many are afraid that the brands’ and manufacturers’ demand for leather for the next few seasons has fallen – and this looks to be proof.

Smaller satellites of production are suffering; some say the big units hope this will eliminate part of their competition.

Many of the wet blue traders in Asia, who had been very busy, have been quiet since spring, and this is also having a knock-on effect down the pipeline
