Australian cattle slaughter rates are high and have been all year

Slaughter rates may have fallen dramatically in North America in the course of 2014, but in Australia it’s a different story.

Livestock industry marketing body Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) has said slaughter rates there are “very high” and have been throughout 2014.

Across Australia, weekly slaughter is currently running at around 170,000 head of cattle and that slaughter rates have been at these levels for most of the year. MLA says this is close to 10,000 head per week (more than 6%) up on 2013 and as much as 40,000 head per week more (30%) on the figures for 2012.
