Tanners are losing orders over Savar delays, Bangladesh industry association admits
26/09/2014
Reports say tanners whose business model is to export crust and finished leather from Bangladesh have begun to suffer because of compliance issues. In recent comments, Shahin Ahmed, president of the Bangladesh Tanners' Association (BTA), told media that buyers in Europe and the US were “demanding compliance in our tanneries”.
He said some buyers have already withdrawn orders because of delays in the industry’s move to a new cluster at Savar, near the capital, Dhaka. He added that his member companies have asked to be given until 2016 to complete the move.
Nevertheless, although exports of finished leather declined in value by 8.4% compared to the same two months in 2013, falling to just over $66 million, the value of shipments of finished leathergoods increased by 49% to more than $40 million while those of leather footwear increased in value by more than 30% to reach $95.5 million.
