Question on carbon footprint of each square-metre of leather is coming
Dr Brigitte Wegner, from the leather business unit at chemical manufacturer BASF, has said that the global leather industry must prepare itself to be able to tell customers the carbon footpring of each square-metre of leather.

Speaking at the 2014 CICB Sustainability Forum in Brazil on August 21, Dr Wegner said: “In automotive, the carbon footpring for each component of a car is becoming more and more restricted. And it’s the same in footwear. Therefore, it’s only a matter of time before these industries ask what the carbon footprint is for each square-metre of leather they buy. And it’s not an easy question to answer.”

Pressed by leatherbiz during the question-and-answer session at the end of her presentation, Dr Wegner went on to say that automotive manufacturers in Europe will face much stricter limits on carbon emissions from 2015 onwards. “It’s becoming much stricter,” she said. “They are not asking for the carbon footprint of one square-metre of leather yet, but they are working on it. Certainly in the next ten or 15 years people will want to know the carbon footprint of the whole of a car and leather will be part of that.”
