African interest helps boost Brazilian beef exports

Brazil achieved record export revenues from shipments of beef in the first half of 2014.

Figures for the six-month period show that the country exported 762,000 tonnes of beef, with a value of just over $3.4 billion, the largest amount the country has ever registered for first-half beef export revenues.

These figures represent growth of 12.7% in volume and of 13.3% in value compared to the first half of 2013.

Meat exporters’ association president, Antônio Jorge Camardelli, said high demand from Hong Kong and Russia accounted for much of the growth, but he also made the point that countries in North Africa, particularly Egypt, Libya and Algeria, are beginning to import important volumes of Brazilian beef. He also said Angola was becoming “an interesting market”, with shipments to that part of Africa doubling year on year.
