Spanish police break-up illegal cattle slaughter network

Twenty people in different parts of Spain have been arrested following an investigation into illegal cattle slaughter.

Police said a ring of criminals had been stealing “large numbers of heads of cattle” from fields since November 2013, when farmers in a remote area of León raised the alarm. Detectives eventually uncovered a network involving cattle thieves, abattoir workers, butchers and distributors.

The thieves used a sophisticated tagging and documentation system to falsify the paperwork necessary to trade in fresh meat. This included false identification details for each cow killed.

Three of the people arrested were abattoir workers.
