China: Officials break up leather smuggling ring

Reports from China say authorities in Huangpu have cracked a leather smuggling operation involving 11 gangs and up to 6.09 billion yuan ($1 billion) worth of material.

In an investigation reportedly taking over three years, customs officials discovered falsified documents, illegal shipments and have described it as one of the biggest leather smuggling operations on record.

Almost 90 people have been arrested in connection with the case, according to reports.
