Tanzania: tanners want talks over raw materials smuggling

11/03/2013
The Tanzania Tanners Association (TTA) has asked for a meeting with the country’s prime minister, Mizengo Pinda to ask him to intervene to stop smuggling of local raw hides and skins.

According to local reports, at least seven important tanneries in Tanzania have stopped production because of the lack of raw materials.

TTA chairman, Onorato Garavaglia, has said that the situation became worse since the government imposed a 90% export tax on hides and skins. Rather than pay such a high tax, it seems, traders prefer to deal with smugglers.

Tanzania’s minister for industry and trade, Dr Abdallah Kigoda, said in recent comments to local media that government talks are to take place in the near future to discuss ways of reviving the tanning industry. He told one newspaper, The Citizen: “It is really worrying that local industries close down at a time when there is a need to revive them in an effort to create job opportunities.”
