More detailed figures from France show value increase and volume decline

France’s Conseil National Du Cuir (National Leather Council) has released more detail of its results for 2013. As well as pointing out a reduction in slaughter in France and a consequent decline in the levels of raw material available to tanners, the results, published in mid-April, show that France’s tanners brought in revenues of €427.5 million in 2013, a rise of 6% compared to 2012.

This increase occurred in spite of a decline in the volumes of materials French tanners processed last year. Bovine tanners processed 2,315 tonnes of raw material, while calfskin tanners had an output of just over 1.5 million square-metres. These figures represent declines of 6% and 1% respectively.

Small-skin tanners processed a stable level of sheepskins at just over 4 million, but the volume of goatskins going through French tanneries rose by 15%.
