Most León tanners are missing out on automotive boom

A recent report from Mexico suggests that hardly any of the estimated 600 tanners in the state of Guanajuato, most of which are based in and around the city of León, are gaining from increased demand for automotive leather from Mexico.

Fabián Collazo Rosales, chief operating officer of León-based tanning group Lefarc and current president of national industry association Canalcur, and of Guanajuato industry body Cicur, said in comments to local media that he believes only around 20 local firms have secured business from the increase in demand for automotive leather.

In most cases, the Guanajuato tanners who have gained have been ones chosen to supply wet blue to the major global automotive leather players who have increased production in Mexico or moved into the country for the first time.

Mr Collazo’s calculation is that, of 42,000 hides being processed every day in Guanajuato at the moment, 50% are now going to automotive leather. He said: “Around 20 of the established tanneries in Guanajuato are working on automotive leather now, but without supplying automotive companies directly. What they do is carry out wet-end processing for big players in automotive leather.”

According to Fabián Collazo, more specialist automotive tanners are likely to set up plants in Mexico.
