FICE president defends Spain’s footwear industry in the face of ‘hidden economy’ claims

Spain’s footwear industry association FICE has reacted angrily to a report in an Alicante-based newspaper claiming that a police investigation into ‘hidden economy’ production in the Valencia region found the footwear sector to be the worst offender.

Newspaper La Verdad said on April 7 that police inspected 42 local manufacturing firms in the course of the operation and that 60% of them were making shoes without the necessary permits and without registering their workers, some of whom were in the country illegally.

Responding to the claims, FICE president, José Juan Sanchís, who runs high-end brand Rebeca Sanver, said: “Footwear is far from the worst offender in the hidden economy. In fact, the reverse is true. At this moment in time, no industry follows labour laws more faithfully than ours.”
