IULTCS president wants new leather-producing countries to join the fold
Three months into her tenure as president of the International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists Societies (IULTCS), Dr Patricia Casey has said in an open letter to her colleagues that one of her aims is to bring into the organisation leather industry professionals from parts of the world that are newer to the sector.

“One of the goals of my time as president will be to establish ties to organisations, institutions and individual professionals in these countries and invite them to become part of IULTCS,” she said.

Dr Casey added: “The leather industry is facing similar challenges in all parts of the world: we need to continue to develop and apply technology that is environment-friendly, and to promote initiatives that will increase consumers’ knowledge of the leather industry as a sustainable activity, that transforms a by-product of the meat industry into a material that is elegant, comfortable and strong, with particular properties that set it apart from others.”

She said she believes IULTCS needs to be a bridge between developed and developing countries, one that uses modern means of communication to make sure universities, institutions, chemists’ and technologists’ societies and leather industry professionals around the world can share their knowledge and experience.

“We mustn’t wait until we meet up at industry events to exchange ideas,” she concluded. “I invite all concerned to send to the executive committee of IULTCS any suggestion that people believe may prove valuable to our organisation.”

Dr Patricia Casey celebrates 39 years in the industry this year and works for Argentinean tanning group Fonseca. She was one of the judges for the third programme of Tannery of the Year.
