David Tang takes Nissan to task over “cheap leather” smell

UK-based entrepreneur Sir David Tang has written in his regular column in the Financial Times of having advised “the omnipotent Carlos Ghosn”, chairman and chief executive of Nissan, of the need to “upgrade the leather for his high-end Japanese cars”.

In a popular column called House and Home, Sir David answers FT readers’ enquiries about “property, interiors – and modern manners for globetrotters”. Addressing a question about the correctness of putting covers over car-seats, he said this was acceptable as “the standard felt material found in most modern cars is nasty”.

He went on to say that his reason for advising Nissan to upgrade is the “luxurious smell” high-quality leather gives to a car’s interior. The entrepreneur said that even Nissan vehicles favoured by the Japanese emperor have “a cheap leather smell”.
