January hide exports up in Brazil, but wet blue still dominates
Official statistics from Brazil show exports of hides and skins with a value of $201.9 million for the month of January 2014, an increase of 22.5% on the figure for January 2013.

In total, Brazilian tanners and traders exported more than 2.7 million hides in the course of January 2014, which represents an increase in volume of 2.4% in comparison to the same month last year.

However, 54.9% of these hides were exported as wet blue and only 37.8% as finished leather, which represents a continuation of a new trend that began in 2013. Until last year, finished leather had a greater share of export volumes than wet blue.

Finished leather still has a greater share of the value of exports. In January, finished leather contributed 49.5% of the total value of hide exports, compared to wet blue’s share of 38.4%.
