German specialty chemicals company has named Matthias Zachert as its new chief executive and chairman of its executive board, replacing Axel Heitmann. Dr Heitmann will leave the post he has held since Lanxess launched in 2004 at the end of February 2014; Matthias Zachert will take up his new role before May 15, 2014.

Current chief financial officer, Bernhard Duettmann, will act as interim chief executive of Lanxess until Mr Zachert rejoins the company.

Matthias Zachert was chief financial officer of Lanxess between 2002 and 2011, when he left to become chief financial officer of pharmaceutical and life sciences company Merck.

The chairman of the Lanxess supervisory board, Rolf Stromberg, said on announcing his return that Mr Zachert “performed excellent work as chief financial officer at Lanxess and has an outstanding reputation among employees, as well as in the capital market”.
