Brazil’s industry ministry has concluded an investigation into a fatal accident at a tannery in Mato Grosso do Sul in 2012.

On December 6, the ministry said packer and tanning group Marfrig had agreed to pay damages of five million reals, equivalent to around $2.1 million, and to make a series of improvements to its Bataguassu tannery.

Four workers at the tannery died at the end of January 2012 and 20 others were injured following the spillage of a chemical product. At the time, the authorities imposed a fine of one million reals on the company.

The additional award of five million reals in damages comes after a formal investigation by the ministry, which has taken the best part of a year. Marfrig will make the payments in five annual instalments.
