Tannery of the Year: European finalists named

21/11/2013
World Leather magazine has named the finalists for Europe in the fourth Tannery of the Year programme, which begins this month.

From a total of 11 candidate tanneries for Europe, two have emerged as finalists. A group of industry experts nominates tanneries in each of five global territories for their performance against the Tannery of the Year corporate social responsibility criteria.

The purpose of the competition is to highlight and make public the best examples in the global leather industry of tanneries that look after the environment well, take good care of their employees, work closely and fairly with local and national authorities, are economically sound, committed to innovation and quality, and who have established strong partnerships with customers and suppliers.

We can reveal that the two finalist tanneries for Europe this time are, in alphabetical order:

- Couro Azul, Alcanena, Portugal, and
- Wollsdorf Leder, Wollsdorf, Austria.

In-depth reports on the work of both tanneries will appear in the December 2013-January 2014 issue of World Leather and both will go forward to take part in the final, which will take place in Shanghai in September 2014 at the time of the All China Leather Exhibition. We congratulate Wollsdorf Leder and Couro Azul for their success so far and wish them good luck as the competition continues.

After Europe, the attention of Tannery of the Year will turn to the Americas, Asia excluding China, Africa and China.

World Leather is grateful for the important backing Tannery of the Year has from sponsors BASF, Buckman and Lanxess, and the support of the International Council of Tanners, the International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists Societies and the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation, as well as from the APLF exhibition.
