Egyptian economy still struggling, but leather lends a hand

15/11/2013
Egypt’s trade and industry minister, Mounir Fakhri Abdel-Nour, has praised the country’s leather industry for its contribution towards making the country’s economy less dependent on petroleum.

Results for the first ten months of 2013 show that Egypt’s non-petroleum exports grew by 12% compared to the same period last year.

On announcing the figures, the minister singled out the leather sector for praise, pointing out that leather exports over the ten-month period had a value of almost $14 million. This small amount still reflects the recent political and economic changes in Egypt, but it represents growth of 26.7%.
