The Asia Foundation wants to mediate over Bangladesh tanneries

Non-profit organisation The Asia Foundation has said it wants to help the government of Bangladesh and tannery owners in the country establish a clearer dialogue over the long-running problem of relocation.

Proposals to relocate tanneries to a purpose-built site at Savar have been in place for almost ten years but tannery owners have been in dispute with the authorities over funding for a new common effluent treatment plant there. They appeared to have reached agreement earlier in 2013, but The Asia Foundation’s chief economist, Véronique Salze-Lozac’h, said during a recent visit to Bangladesh that there was still a lack of momentum and that her organisation was acting as a facilitator in the dialogue to help speed the process up.

She urged Bangladeshi tanners to embrace the relocation to Savar, saying that tanners must make their operations as environmentally responsible as possible if they want to keep long-term customers in Europe and North America on board.
