04/11/2013
The Combined Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) for the Korangi tannery cluster in Karachi, Pakistan, has been closed due to the damage of a pipeline.

Over 100 tanneries are linked with this CETP and now untreated water is being released into the Arabian Sea, according to local reports.

The plant has a capacity of 43,000 cubic metres and was built with the financial support of Pakistan government and Netherlands.

According Gulzar Firoz, President of CETP, a local contractor working on road construction in the area has dug up over half kilometre of pipeline of the CETP, not only causing closure of the plant but incurring a loss of over Rs 6 million ($41,000).

He said that as a result of the incident, the plant has remained shut for the past week.

The Commissioner Karachi City has ordered an inquiry into the incident and the early repair of the pipeline.
