French calf skin tannery plans major expansion

French tannery Tanneries Haas, a family business founded in 1842 and now run by the sixth generation, is planning an EUR 8 million expansion next year, with additional facilities to be operational in 2015-16, to meet increased demand from luxury goods groups.

While most of the leather industry in the region declined in the 1980s, Tanneries Haas made an early bet on the luxury industry and fashion, reported French publication Les Echos.

Its calf skins are selected to ensure traceability to slaughterhouses, it has two teams that inspect the farms and it has invested in animal husbandry projects to reduce parasite damage to skins.

In 10 years, Haas has doubled its staff and nearly tripled its production, with 70% going into leathergoods and 30% to shoes.
