UK firm finds local tanning ‘cheaper’

Cambridge based Eastern Counties Leather has moved its sheepskin tanning requirements from China to the UK after claiming rising costs there had diminished the country’s manufacturing advantage.

The company had been sending its sheepskins out to China and then shipping them back to the UK once they were tanned.

It awarded the contract to Devonia Sheepskins tannery, which says nearshoring offers advantages such as proximity to customers. However, the move may have been linked to the fact that Eastern Counties saved Devonia from administration in February.
