Word of mouth fuels growth for Saddleback

Founder of Texas-based leathergoods brand Saddleback, Dave Munson, has said the spreading of his company’s good name by word of mouth is responsible for more than one-third of sales.

In an interview with local media, Mr Munson declined to give sales figures for 2012, but said Saddleback had achieved growth of 45% compared to 2011.

He founded the company in 1999. While travelling in Mexico, he drew a design of his ideal bag and asked a local leather artisan in a small town to make it for him. When he returned to the US, he was inundated with enquiries from strangers in the street about where he had bought the bag, so he went back to Mexico, had more made and took them back across the border to sell from the back of his van.

Now Saddleback stocks handbags, messenger bags, duffles, satchels, belts, wallets and suitcases, all made at its own factory. But it has stayed true to its Mexican roots too by locating the factory in León, Guanajuato, and using locally tanned leather in most of the designs.

So confident is he of the quality of the products that Mr Munson issues a 100-year warranty with everyone, which is why each bag comes with a label that says: “They’ll fight over it when you’re dead.”
