Egypt unrest no barrier for beef exports

The US Meat Export Federation (USMEF) has said it remains concerned about stability in Egypt and the surrounding region, but that exports of US beef to the African country are thriving.

In the first five months of 2013, US exporters shipped almost 60,000 tonnes of beef to Egypt, an increase of 12% compared to the same period in 2012. USMEF said this made Egypt the fourth-largest export market for US beef so far this year.

USMEF senior vice president for marketing and communications, Dan Halstrom, said in recent comments that demand for US beef in Egypt remains strong, ports remain open and are operating in “a secure and reliable manner” and the Egyptian currency has remained stable. “These are all import factors in keeping beef exports flowing to this important destination,” he said.
