Smit & zoon to focus on Simplicity at ACLE 2013

During the fair it will launch Simplicity, a concept for “reducing the complexity at the heart of the leather-making process itself”.
In the build-up to the Shanghai event, Smit & zoon said: “Making leather is no longer the straightforward art it once was. Leather makers now have to comply with such a vast amount of legislation and other regulations that the actual process of producing leather has been effectively side-lined.”
Simplicity is an approach developed by the Dutch company to simplify and boost the efficiency of post-tanning operations. “The concept demonstrates conclusively that by rethinking and simplifying conventional processes, leather can still be made to meet every demand in terms of looks, handling and other properties,” it said.
Measurable savings in water and energy use are part of the Simplicity concept, which Smit & zoon said would help tanners around the world make their production processes leaner and more sustainable and enable them to put “an environmentally-friendly stamp” on their finished leather.
“Adopting the Simplicity approach will ultimately lead to a reduction in costs and demonstrate you are a sustainable producer who is modernising your working methods out of consideration for the environment,” the company said.
Smit & zoon has already prepared a Simplicity leather collection that will be on display at ACLE. It has invited tanners from any part of the world to go and see the collection and to learn more about the concept.
