Car buyers demand leather over textiles

Although there have been great advances in textiles over recent years, including synthetics impregnated with ceramic offering cooling and warming benefits, consumers still prefer leather seating in their cars, according to a lead designer for BMW.

“There's material technology that's outpaced leather by a mile, but it's hard to shake the perception of natural hides being synonymous with luxury,” said Los Angeles-based Sandy McGill. "There is this traditional mentality. People want leather in their cars."

Skip Horween, president of Horween Leathers, a Chicago tannery that supplies the leather to shoemakers John Lobb USA, Timberland and Alden, agrees. "The concept that you have something that looks like you took the time to break it in is very comforting," he said.
