JBS publishes waste, water and energy consumption figures

Figures published in its Sustainability Report for 2012 show that Brazilian packer and tanning group is processing 88,000 hides a day at its tanneries in Brazil, Australia, the US and China.

According to the report, JBS consumed 570,612 gigajoules of energy in producing its leather in 2012, 93% of which came from renewable resources. The corresponding figure for water consumption, for the year, is almost 4.6 million cubic-metres.

Solid waste generated by JBS’s tanneries amounted to 414,771 tonnes in 2012, 98% of which was non-hazardous. The report says 69% of this waste goes into compost, while the company was able to recycle 23% of it, with 8% going into landfill (half of the landfill space used belongs to JBS).

On the subject of greenhouse gas emissions, the Sustainability Report stops short of giving a similar breakdown. JBS says in the document that it has developed tools to measure and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions in its activities. For the last four years the company has compiled an inventory to enable it to identify the sources of emissions so that it can prioritise actions to reduce its carbon footprint.

JBS says it wants to maintain transparency regarding emissions and points out that it has applied for membership of the Brazilian GHG Protocol programme, a platform that aims to provide Brazilian organisations with a method for emissions accounting based on international standards. The programme publishes the emissions results for participating companies online, but had not completed figures for 2012 at the time of the publication of the JBS report.
