Scottish tannery Bridge of Weir Leather recently supported a fashion and textiles project at the The Glasgow School of Art. It provided materials for the initiative, called Leather Project 2013: Rework, Reinvent, Regenerate. The company, part of the Scottish Leather Group, also provided mentoring and the opportunity for the winning student, Kelly McEwan, to attend a design event in London.

Bridge of Weir supplied leather for the project in the form of scraps for experimentation purposes and ten full hides for the final pieces of work.

Susan Ross, design manager at Bridge of Weir, and a former Glasgow School of Art graduate, spoke to the year group of fashion and textiles students at the beginning of the project to provide information about the leather industry. She also supported the students by providing in-depth tailored feedback on each student’s work.

Ms Ross, said: “It’s been an incredibly fulfilling experience to go back and share my knowledge with these budding designers. All the students produced work of a very high quality and I’m delighted Bridge of Weir, both a local company and an international supplier, has been able to support the project.”
