Labour unrest halts production in Korangi

19/06/2013
Reports from Pakistan say industrial unrest halted production at the Tannery Zone in the Korangi Industry Area, 20 kilometres from Karachi, on June 15.

According to reports, a temporary agency worker was injured in an accident in one of the tanneries, with tannery owners insisting the accident was down to human error on the part of the agency worker. The tannery’s management paid for hospital treatment and offered help with further medical expenses.

Workers staged a protest, which spread and brought prodction throughout the tanning cluster to a stop.

The Pakistan Tanners Association said the halt in production had cost a lot of money and insisted that workers should follow the correct channels to table any complaints.
