Eblex publishes cattle herd sizes for wide range of countries

According to a new series of reports published by the English Beef and Lamb Executive (Eblex), the total cattle herd size in the US was down by 2% at the start of 2013 compared to a year earlier at 89.3 million head.

Along with the US, statistics on the herd size in country’s such as Argentina, Brazil and Australia is reported regularly, but the Eblex reports included figures for a number of other countries.

Canada’s herd size remained the same size at the start of this year as at the beginning of 2012 at around 12.3 million head.

At 9.7 million head, the UK’s cattle herd was also the same size as a year earlier, while France’s was down by 1%, but still much bigger than the UK’s, at just over 19 million head. Germany’s herd size remained unchanged at the start of 2013 at 12.5 million head, while that of the Netherlands had increased year on year by around 2% to reach more than 3.9 million head. Ireland recorded an even bigger increase, reaching 6.2 million head, 6% higher than a year earlier as farmers expand their breeding herds.
