Shanghai-based research consultancy the Hurun Research Institute has published the 2013 edition of its Chinese Luxury Consumer Survey, showing the lifestyle and brand preferences of China’s wealthy consumers. This is the ninth year in which Hurun Research has published the report.

For the survey, consumers were asked for their preferred consumer goods brands for gifts for men and for women.

For men, Louis Vuitton is a clear winner, with consumer electronics brand Apple in second place. Other high-end leathergoods brands in the top 15 are (in descending order) Hermès, Chanel, Cartier, Gucci, Montblanc, Dior, Burberry, Armani and Prada.

The women’s list features a top ten, with Chanel pipping Louis Vuitton for the number-one spot. Other leathergoods brands in the list are (in descending order) Cartier, Tiffany, Montblanc, Gucci, Prada, Dior and Burberry.

Also of potential interest to the leather industry is the growing popularity of equestrian sports among wealthy Chinese consumers. The survey also asked which sports respondents like to take part in. Swimming is the hobby of choice according to the results, beating golf to top spot. Both swimming and golf have taken the top two sports in recent years. However, Hurun Research said horse riding was up to fifth and is the fastest rising sporting pursuit among China’s wealthy.

Individuals across China with a personal wealth of at least RMB 10 million (equivalent to $1.6 million) took part in the survey. Among them were 69 super-rich individuals with wealth of RMB 100 million ($16 million).
