The Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) in Tanzania is to launch courses on hides, skins and leather to enable graduates to increase their earnings from the product, according to local reports.

In 2010, 2.7 million cattle, 2.7 million goats and 1 million sheep were reportedly slaughtered for meat, with the hides and skins exported raw. The course aims to teach people how to add value by processing the skins in the country.

“Only Egypt, Sudan, Nigeria, Algeria, Morocco are in the top 30 producers of leather, the fast developing are Ethiopia, South Africa and Kenya, but Tanzania has to learn from these countries if we want to be top producer of leather,” said Prof Gabriel Mbasa.
