French luxury goods group PPR has bought a majority stake in Christopher Kane’s label, which will allow the Scottish designer to move into leathergoods.

The French group, which owns a number of fashion brands including Gucci and YSL, said it wants to grow the brand and expand in Asia.

Alexis Babeau, managing director of the PPR luxury division, said: “What really matters to us is not size or profitability, but what a brand can become tomorrow.”

Mr Kane set the label up in 2006, after graduating from Central Saint Martins design college in London. He runs the business with his sister, and employs 26 people in London.

Mr Kane said: "PPR has an incredible reputation for building some of the very best luxury brands in the world.”
