EU renews chamois leather tariffs
06/12/2012
The EU originally imposed the 58.9% duty in 2006 in a bid to prevent UK-based Hutchings & Harding and Italian company Marocchinerie e Scamoscerie Italiane being undercut, according to news agency Bloomberg.
Their situation is “very fragile and vulnerable” and China has “significant” spare production capacity, according to the EU.
The levy was introduced to prevent Chinese exporters selling chamois leather in Europe below cost. The five-year renewal will take effect from December 13.
Other countries that export chamois leather to the EU include India (16%), Turkey (10%) and New Zealand (7%).
