Loewe will expand leathergoods production in Spain
04/12/2012
In recent comments to French media (Loewe is one of the brands owned by Paris-based luxury goods group LVMH), chief executive, Lisa Montague, explained: “We have to adapt our production capacity to our growth plans. We want to develop the potential of this brand, which is still not well enough known internationally.”
Around 20% of Loewe’s production takes place at its own plant in Getafe, with the other 80% coming from artisan suppliers in Ubrique, a small town in the province of Cádiz in the south of Spain with a long tradition in leather. Ms Montague said that Loewe thought about setting up a second factory of its own in Cádiz, to tap into the local skills base, to cope with its expansion plans. But because this would have led to duplication in management functions, she said the decision in the end was to expand in Getafe and train new people in artisan leathergoods manufacture.
