Jaguar Land Rover to begin manufacturing in China

20/11/2012
British carmaker Jaguar Land Rover has been granted formal approval from the Chinese government to begin manufacturing in the country, in a £1.1bn joint venture with local company Chery Automobile.

The two companies are building a manufacturing facility near Shanghai, due to begin production in 2014, that will also include a research and development centre and engine production facility.

Sales of the Jaguar and Land Rover brands in China rose 80% in the first 10 months of this year, driven mainly by the Jaguar XJ and XF models and strong demand for the Range Rover Evoque.

In a joint statement, Ralf Speth, Jaguar Land Rover’s chief executive, and Yin Tongyao, CEO of Chery Automobile, said: "We are delighted to have reached this milestone, achieved thanks to the understanding and foresight of the Chinese authorities and we want to thank them for recognising the potential of our joint venture in the fast-growing Chinese market. We will now begin working to harness the capabilities of our respective companies, to produce relevant, advanced models for Chinese consumers."

Chery is the largest Chinese car exporter and one of the country's most productive automotive manufacturers.
