Big brands move bag production back to Spain
11/10/2012
Fernando Gutiérrez, secretary general of Asefma, the Spanish Association of Leathergoods Manufacturers, has named Dior and Chanel as major luxury brands that have begun sourcing bags in Spain again, specifically in the town of Ubrique, a traditional centre for high-quality leathergoods in the province of Cádiz.
Mr Gutiérrez said in recent comments to local media that Spain’s exports of leathergoods rose by 17% in 2011. He said big-name brands were coming back to Spain because manufacturing partners in China have told them the volume of their orders is too small and because brands feel the levels of quality control they are able to have in China falls short of what they require.
He said: “Some manufacturers in Ubrique have told me that in 2011 their production for export markets increased by 50% or even 100%, and even though it’s true that the ideal for us would be to have our own brands, I would say that that’s the way things are going. We have top-level craftspeople and great manufacturers, but because they have always had a lot of demand to produce for overseas companies, they simply haven’t had the time or the inclination to launch their own brands; their operations were already profitable.”
