New deadline fixed for Savar effluent plant
Bangladesh’s industry minister Dilip Barua says he expects a central
effluent treatment plant (CETP) to be established in Savar, Dhaka, by June 2013; 18 months ahead of the original deadline.
Mr Barua got together with Bangladesh
Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) chairman Fakhrul Islam, Savar project director M Abu
Sadek and Bangladesh Tanners Association chairman Shamsul Huda to discuss the importance of keeping the site as environmentally
friendly as possible.
"Bangladeshi leathergoods will be under threat in the European Union market
if we fail to fulfil the compliance regarding environment issue. The ruling
government is working to make the industry
eco-friendly," he said.
The leather zone cost 5.46 billion taka ($66.8 billion) to set up and is expected to generate 100,000
jobs. Around 155 factories will be based there in total.
